When Do I Apply For Social Security Disability Benefits?

You can apply for Social Security Disability Benefits if you either suffer from a condition which has kept you off of work for at least twelve months, or if your condition is expected to keep you off of work for at least twelve months. However, an application can be filed only if you have been off of work for at least 30 days.

How Do I Apply For Social Security Disability Benefits?

You may either apply in person, online via the Social Security Website, or with the assistance of a representative. To process your application, Social Security will need the following information:

• Marital Status
• Names of Children who became disabled prior to the age of 22
• Names of unmarried children under age 18
• Employment information for the last 15 years
• Medical Providers treating you for your disability

If you apply online, Social Security will mail you a copy of your application to sign – you must return the signed application, or else they will not process it.

Social Security Disability Application Process

The social security disability application process can be lengthy – it can take the SSA anywhere from four months to even one year to process your application. This is because the government is requesting documentation to build your case and evaluate your disability – they will be sending you forms to complete, requesting your medical records, and may even schedule a physical or mental exam for you with one of their doctors. Social Security will assign a claims representative to process your application and paperwork, and this person may try to contact you from time to time for more information. It is important to respond to all requests for information from Social Security immediately, or else your decision may be delayed.
