Types Of Social Security Disability Programs

HomeThe Social Security Administration offers a variety of disability benefits for children and adults. Each program has a technical requirement and a medical requirement. The medical requirement for all adults is the same – you must have a medical condition that has prevented you from working or is expected to prevent you from working for at least twelve months or end in death. Here is a brief summary of the technical requirements for each of the disability programs.

Social Security Disability (SSD) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

Social Security Disability (SSD) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is for workers who have paid a certain amount in taxes and have earned the required number of work credits. If you are disabled at age 31 or older, you generally need at least 20 credits in the 10 years immediately before you became disabled. You can earn up to 4 credits per year. In other words, you need to work at least 5 out of the last 10 years in order to have enough work credits to qualify for Social Security Disability. If you are disabled prior to age 31, the rules are slightly different. Please call us at 855-MIKE-WINS (855-645-3946) and we will help you determine whether you have enough work credits for Social Security Disability. There is no fee until we win.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is for people with limited income and resources who have not earned enough work credits for Social Security Disability. Children under 18 can also qualify for Supplemental Security Income. Income is money you receive, such as wages, benefits and pensions. It also includes food and shelter. Resources include real estate, bank accounts, cash, stocks and bonds. If you are married, Social Security will include your spouse’s income and resources when deciding if you qualify for Supplemental Security Income. For children under 18, Social Security will include the parents’ income and resources. Please call us at 855-MIKE-WINS (855-645-3946) if you have been denied your Supplemental Security Income benefits. There is no fee until we win.

Disabled Adult Child (DAC) Benefits

Disabled Adult Child (DAC) benefits are for adults who became disabled between the ages of 18 and 22. For a disabled adult to become entitled to the Disabled Adult Child benefit, one or both parents must be receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits or must have died and worked long enough to qualify for Social Security. The Disabled Adult Child must meet the adult definition of disability and must not be married. The individual does not need to have worked to get these benefits. Please call us at 855-MIKE-WINS (855-645-3946) if you have been denied your Disabled Adult Child Benefits. There is no fee until we win.

Disabled Widow or Widower (DWB) Benefits

Disabled Widow or Widower (DWB) benefits are payable to the widow, widower or surviving divorced spouse of a worker. The widow or widower must be between the ages of 50 and 60, must meet the definition of disability for adults and their disability must have started before or within seven years of the worker’s death. The widow or widower does not need to have worked to get these benefits. Please call us at 855-MIKE-WINS (855-645-3946) if you have been denied your Disabled Widow or Widower Benefits. There is no fee until we win.
