FAQs
-
How does a Pay It Forward Comedy show work?
According to Jason Douglas, he sets up a Zoom event and gives it to the bar or restaurant, which collects donations for the show; there’s no set price, so it’s on the honor system. For example, a bar posts the show on Facebook, people donate to it through PayPal and receive the Zoom link, and usually four or five comedians perform. The donation goes directly to the venue, so Douglas isn’t responsible for taking in the money.
-
Who performs on Pay It Forward Comedy shows?
Douglas said every comedian he called agreed right away, including comedians who appeared on Seinfeld and Breaking Bad; the Breaking Bad performer played Hank’s partner, Agent Gomez, for five seasons and was a comedian before the show. Douglas said the headliners started in comedy clubs, so they know venues are how comedians make their living.
-
How much has a Pay It Forward Comedy show raised for a venue?
Douglas said a show at a bar in northern Michigan, co-hosted with a venue in Illinois, had about 60 or 70 people log on and raised about $800. He added that some people have donated as much as $300 to a venue.

How did Jason Douglas's comedy booking business adapt during the pandemic?
Douglas said that when the whole country shut down in March, all his bookings for April and May were done. Then a customer emailed asking for a comedy show on Zoom; Douglas thought it would never work and, not knowing what to charge, charged him a 72-count of toilet paper during the shortage. The show went well, and he said they booked over a thousand virtual shows in 2020.
