FAQs

Answers to common questions from this episode of Open Mike.
  • What is the status of the investigation into Onision?

Chris Hansen says the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department continued its investigation, set up a hotline and email for information from victims, and worked with an FBI task force based in Tacoma; the FBI obtained a cell phone and computer from one of the victims and examined them. He says the investigation is active, but world events, COVID-19 and then the protests, have gotten in the way. In his opinion, the evidence will add up to a criminal complaint.

  • Who is Dahvie Vanity and what is he accused of?

Dahvie Vanity started out as a hairdresser with a presence on MySpace and was the frontman for the group Blood on the Dance Floor. Hansen says he was able to groom and manipulate girls ages 10 to 15, and that the allegations include forced oral sex and violent assaults that in multiple cases left young women bleeding. Hansen says he has interviewed more than a dozen of these young women.

  • Why won't Chris Hansen do a live interview with Onision?

According to Mike Morse, Onision wanted to do the interview live on his channels, where he could manipulate it. Hansen says he wanted a real, safe interview and would not go live where Onision could make a mockery of it, and that multiple victims asked him not to disrespect them by putting Onision on live. He says Onision has refused to date, but Hansen would still do an interview in a setting where they have some measure of control.

  • Has Dahvie Vanity been criminally charged?

As of this episode, no. Hansen says Vanity was investigated twice, once in Colorado and once in Florida, and charges were never brought. He says there are numerous current investigations because the statute of limitations has not run out on a lot of these cases.

  • How did Chris Hansen get involved in the Dahvie Vanity story?

He says there was a steady drumbeat on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook urging him to look at Dahvie Vanity, and potential victims and people in contact with them reached out to his moderators. He also credits two Huffington Post reporters, who about a year earlier had put together a dozen victims and then did a follow-up, and who told him they thought he could take the story to the next level.
