Elon Musk’s Brother aims to create 100 gardens in Detroit Schools
Big Green is a national nonprofit that promotes healthy eating and science education. Kimbal Musk, Elon Musk’s brother, is currently planning to put 100 gardens in metro Detroit Schools. According to Crain’s reports, Big Green is aiming to raise $5 million which would fund the installation of the gardens. Kimbal Musk told the business site, “We have stopped educating our kids about real food for a couple of decades now, and the results have been disastrous, rampant diabetes … and in some neighborhoods, over 40 percent of kindergartners go into kindergarten obese,” he said. “It’s not something they did to themselves. It’s what we did to them, and we now need to fix it.”
The Detroit Public Schools already have a farm to school program that they operate called the Detroit School Garden Collaborative which has been ongoing since 2011. The Detroit School Garden Collaborative, or DSGC for short, provides our students over 100,000 daily lunches, a nutrition education class, and a school garden program. The new contributions by Kimbal Musk and his nonprofit Big Green, will be a welcoming addition to our students already growing gardens.
