In some fantastic news, seven of Michigan’s chefs and restaurants have qualified for this year’s James Beard Foundation Awards’ semi-finals. The Seven Metro Detroit, as they are referred to, have been nominated in a number of different categories and have brought pride to the state of Michigan.

The Nominees

The nominations in all the varied categories are as follows:

Best New Restaurant

Michigan’s only entry into this category happens to be the Lady of the House, based in Corktown. The Lady of the House, that opened in September of last year, is one of 28 restaurants competing in the category. Traditionally, all the restaurants nominated for this honor experience an increase in turnout very soon. Chef Kate Williams can expect her restaurant to gather some very well-deserved fame soon enough.

Rising Star Chef of the Year

Making her way into the nomination for Rising Star Chef is Detroit’s young genius, Lena Sareini. The people shortlisted for this honor are normally chefs under or at 30 who have had a major impact on the industry despite their young age. Ms. Sareini works at Selden Standard in Detroit as a pastry chef.

Outstanding Service

The restaurants shortlisted for this accolade must have been open for at least five years and be renowned for their customer service and hospitality. Michigan’s only entry for this accolade is Zingerman’s Delicatessen. Located in Ann Arbor, at 422 Detroit St., this place has nothing but the love of its customers.

Outstanding Baker

Detroit’s Sister Pie holds the honor of hosting this year’s semi-finalist. Lisa Ludwinski, of the fine establishment, has been nominated in this category for the second time in two years. She continues to make the entire state proud.

Outstanding Bar Program

Much like the talented Ms Ludwinski, cocktail lounge Standby at 225 Gratiot, Detroit, is present once again on the semi-final list for Outstanding Bar Program.

Best Chefs: Great Lakes

This year, Detroit has the honor of having two of its chefs named in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category. The Best Chef category is divided among 10 different regions. For this year, James Rigato of Hazel Park’s Mabel Gray, and Thomas Lents from the Apparatus Room are representing Michigan. It is Rigato’s third consecutive appearance on the shortlist and Lents’ first. They are competing with 20 other chefs from across the Great Lakes area.
